On February 10th, 2024, Abby Cares Foundation, in partnership with the Izzi Medical Doctor Forum (IMDF), held a medical outreach at the Ezza-Ofu Primary Health Center, Ezzainyimagu in Izzi LGA, Ebonyi State. This initiative aimed to provide essential healthcare services to the community, focusing on specialties such as
-
- Ophthalmology
- Obstetrics and Gynaecology
- Paediatrics
- Family Medicine
- Surgery.
Medical consultations covered areas such as Ophthalmology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Family Medicine, and Surgery. Diagnostic screenings for blood pressure, blood sugar, hepatitis, HIV, and malaria were conducted. Health education sessions covered topics like nutrition, hygiene practices, family planning, immunization, antenatal and postnatal care, mental health, and positive lifestyle changes. Essential medications and hygiene kits were distributed. Twenty surgeries were performed, and patients received post-operative care.
The outreach saw 919 patient consultations, 420 diagnostic screenings, 48 pairs of free prescribed glasses given, 150 laboratory tests conducted, 2300 doses of medication distributed, and 20 surgeries performed. The health education sessions were attended by 1000 people.
The outreach faced challenges such as limited resources, increased patient numbers, and chronic disease management. Despite these, the event successfully improved community health awareness and access to medical care.
The Ophthalmology department saw 189 patients, provided 48 pairs of reading glasses, managed various eye conditions, and scheduled multiple surgeries. The Surgery department evaluated 111 patients and performed 20 surgeries, with several cases deferred for future dates. The Laboratory department screened 150 patients for various conditions and provided treatments as needed. The Family Medicine department saw 420 patients, made referrals to other departments, and dewormed all patients.
Recommendations include continued support for surgical patients, more awareness campaigns, prompt referral follow-ups, availability of mRDT, free antimalarials to encourage PHC visits, and sponsorship for indigent patients in health insurance schemes.
