Abby Cares Foundation Brings Free Medical Outreach to Ezza South

On February 24th, 2024, Abby Cares Foundation, in collaboration with the Izzi Medical Doctor Forum (IMDF), organized a free medical outreach at the Amagu/Amaezekwe Primary Health Center in Ezza South LGA, Ebonyi State. Sponsored by Distinguished Senator and Hon. Justice Kenneth Eze, this outreach aimed to provide essential healthcare services to the local community.

The outreach focused on five key medical specialties:
- Ophthalmology
- Obstetrics and Gynecology
- Pediatrics
- Family Medicine
- Surgery
Services and Impact
During the medical outreach, the dedicated medical team provided consultations, diagnostic screenings, and health education sessions. These services included:
- Diagnostic Screenings: Blood pressure, blood sugar, hepatitis, HIV, and malaria tests.
- Health Education Sessions: Topics on nutrition, hygiene practices, family planning, immunization, antenatal and postnatal care, mental health, and positive lifestyle changes.
- Medications and Hygiene Kits: Distribution of essential medications and hygiene kits to attendees.

The outreach saw a significant turnout and provided the following services:
- Patient Consultations: 511
- Diagnostic Screenings: 111
- Free Prescribed Glasses Given: 50 pairs
- Laboratory Tests Conducted: 111
- Medications Distributed: Over 2000 doses
- Surgeries Scheduled: 42
Department Highlights
- Ophthalmology: Led by Dr. Nkweagu, the team attended to 113 patients, distributed 50 pairs of reading glasses, and managed various eye conditions. Surgeries for cataract extractions and other eye issues were scheduled for later dates.
- Family Medicine: Dr. Ovuoba Chukwuemeka and his team saw 176 patients, screening for various conditions, treating infections, and deworming all patients.
- Pediatrics: Dr. Eugene-Abah Chinwendu and his team attended to 78 children, treating common childhood illnesses and scheduling necessary referrals.
Challenges and Recommendations
Despite facing challenges like limited resources and high patient turnout, the outreach significantly improved community health awareness and access to medical care. Recommendations for future initiatives include:
- Continued support for surgical patients.
- Increased awareness campaigns on health issues.
- Prompt follow-up on patient referrals.
- Availability of mRDT and free antimalarials at PHCs.
- Sponsorship for indigent patients in health insurance schemes.
